AFLA 2022 Reunion: The American Rite in London

On Saturday, 24th September 2022, the Anglo-Foreign Lodges Association gathered in the Grand Temple at Freemasons’ Hall for a Reunion that brought the unique flavour of the American West Coast to London.

Hosted by America Lodge No 3368, the meeting featured a special delegation from the Grand Lodge of California, specifically the District 717 Degree Team. In front of a packed temple, they demonstrated an exemplification of the Third Degree (Raising) according to the California ritual.

For many of the London brethren in attendance, especially recently raised Master Masons, this was a first opportunity to witness the “American style” of working. The California ritual, rooted in the Preston-Webb tradition, offers a distinct contrast to the Emulation working common in London. It is known for its dramatic flair, extensive lectures, and the dynamic floor work that characterizes American Freemasonry.

The event was honoured by the presence of R.W. Bro. Warren Duke, PJGW, Deputy Metropolitan Grand Master, alongside a host of Grand Officers and Provincial Grand Officers from across the English and International Constitutions. The visiting Californian brethren were warmly received, further cementing the transatlantic bonds that America Lodge has fostered since 1909.

True to the AFLA spirit, the day extended beyond the Lodge room. Partners and guests joined the brethren after the meeting for an exclusive presentation on the history of the Grand Temple by the Museum curator. The celebration concluded with a lively cocktail reception and White Table Festive Board at the Grand Connaught Rooms, where the fellowship continued well into the evening.
