AFLA 2015 Reunion: Looking At Memphis Rite

On 9th April 2015, the Anglo-Foreign Lodges Association once again filled the Grand Temple at Freemasons’ Hall for a demonstration of Masonic ritual rarely seen on English soil.

This year’s hosting duties fell to Lodge “Les Frères Inconnus” (The Unknown Brothers), a lodge working the Rite of Memphis. This esoteric and historically complex rite is seldom encountered by English Freemasons, making the event a unique educational opportunity for the hundreds of brethren in attendance.

The meeting provided a platform for the host Lodge to demonstrate their distinct ceremonial traditions within the majestic setting of the Grand Temple. The Rite of Memphis is known for its Egyptian symbolism and extensive degree structure, offering a stark and fascinating contrast to the standard Emulation working familiar to most London Masons.

True to the AFLA spirit of inclusivity, the event was not just for Masons. While the brethren were at labour in the Temple, partners and guests were treated to an exclusive guided tour of Freemasons’ Hall, hosted by Diane Clements, the then Director of the Library and Museum of Freemasonry.

The day concluded with a vibrant White Table event at the Grand Connaught Rooms, where Masons and their non-Masonic guests came together to celebrate the international bonds of friendship that define the Association.
