It was in an atmosphere filled with emotion and fraternity that La France No. 2060 celebrated its 140th anniversary in late November 2025. This event made for the spectacular renewal of a historic Lodge. Founded in 1884 to offer a Masonic home to French brethren in London following the obediential ruptures of the era, La France Lodge has spanned centuries, surviving wars and crises. However, in recent years, the Lodge had known difficult times, seeing its columns thin and its future become uncertain.
But the flame was never extinguished. Thanks to hard work and a new dynamic, the Lodge has achieved a spectacular turnaround. At this anniversary meeting, visitors were welcomed by a transformed Lodge: vibrant, strong, and looking to the future, it has recently recorded the exceptional affiliation of 40 new joining Brethren, testifying to the newfound appeal of this pillar of Francophone Freemasonry under the United Grand Lodge of England.
The ceremony was honoured by the presence of R.W. Bro. Julian R. Soper, PJGW, Deputy Metropolitan Grand Master. His attendance underscored the importance of this anniversary for London Freemasonry. In a letter addressed to the Lodge following the event, the Deputy Metropolitan Grand Master expressed his admiration:
Taking a break from the ceremony, a historical reading by R.W. Brother Francis DELON, Grand Archivist of the GLNF, recalled the crucial role played by La France Lodge in the events of 1913-1914, which led to the recognition of the Grande Loge Nationale Française (GLNF) by the United Grand Lodge of England.
R.W. Bro. Soper noted he was fascinated to hear the reading setting out the influence the Lodge had in the creation of what is now the GLNF (the French regular Grand Lodge) reminding us that La France No. 2060 is not just a London lodge, but a true historical bridge between English and French Freemasonry.
The celebration continued with a memorable fraternal lunch. But the highlight was undoubtedly the reading of the long list of Brethren wishing to join the Lodge, a fact noted with enthusiasm by the Deputy Metropolitan Grand Master and the other MetGL officers.
The celebrations extended far beyond the Lodge meeting itself, offering brethren and visitors a truly immersive experience.
Guests were treated to a special Masonic tour of the Great Temple, exploring the architectural splendour and symbolism of Freemasons’ Hall. The fellowship continued the following day with a dedicated Masonic London visit on Sunday, allowing to discover the capital’s rich Masonic heritage together… truly a Masonic weekend.
As it gets closer to celebrating another half of a century, La France Lodge No. 2060 is happy and proud celebrate its past; it is writing a new page of its history, proving that tradition and modernity can combine to build a radiant future.
